In this day and age, we have everything at our fingertips. Just a few taps of a computer screen or phone and we have access to all the information we could ever need. This also means that we are bombarded by more messaging, advertising, and information than ever before, so it’s not surprising that when people have trouble focusing they immediately label themselves with ADHD. But do you really have ADHD? This mental health disorder is common, particularly in children, and it’s important that you seek treatment from our team of psychologists and psychiatrists at The Child & Family Counseling Group.
Why can’t I concentrate?
There are many reasons why you might be having trouble concentrating and issues range from medical and psychological conditions to sleep disorders, medications, recreational drugs, and more. While ADHD can cause issues with concentration, medical conditions must be ruled out first. We also find that patients dealing with depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder may also have more challenges with concentration and focus. We can provide them with helpful strategies to help them cope with their mental health problems and improve concentration.
When should I turn to a therapist in Fairfax, VA?
If difficulty focusing is negatively impacting your child’s schoolwork, your work performance, or your overall quality of life, then it’s probably time to speak to a doctor to find out what’s going on and to rule out certain medical conditions that could be impacting your concentration and cognition. Here at The Child & Family Counseling Group, we focus on the cognitive, emotional, and psychological conditions that could affect your focus and concentration.
What should I expect from an evaluation?
During your evaluation, we will ask you questions about the symptoms you are experiencing to get a clearer picture of what’s going on. From there, we may recommend certain neuropsychological testing or we may determine that the current medications you’re taking to manage your mental health disorder may not be effective or could be contributing to your focus issues. If we suspect ADHD, we will also be able to perform the appropriate testing and assessments.
